“You should eat something, sweetheart.”

I hear Leo’s soft and worried voice behind me, but I don’t turn around. I just sit on the window seat. My knees are pulled to my chest, and I have a blanket wrapped around my shoulders like armor. The sun pours through the glass in warm and golden beams, but it doesn’t touch me. It doesn’t melt anything inside. I still feel cold. Empty.

My eyes drift to the untouched plate on the side table. Toast. Fruit. Tea. Everything’s still hot. Everything smells fine. But the second I imagine swallowing, my stomach twists.

“I’m okay,” I whisper dryly. “I’ll eat later.”
