It’s awkward. The tension in the room is so thick you could almost choke on it. I feel like I’m walking on eggshells between Emmette and his mother. We all came to a nearby restaurant, and neither of them has said a word since. Even when the waiter delivered our food, it did nothing to break the silence.

I glance at Emmette and catch his still angry expression, then over to his mother, her face is tight with anxiety.
