Emma’s hands wouldn’t stop shaking as she sat on the edge of the bathtub, staring at the small plastic stick on the counter. The bathroom door was locked, but Mark was right in the next room, humming some old song while he folded laundry on their bed. The normalcy of it made her stomach twist even harder than the morning sickness.
She had bought three tests earlier that day, hiding them at the bottom of her purse like dirty secrets. Now, two minutes had passed. Her heart hammered so loudly she was sure Mark would hear it through the door.
Slowly, she picked up the test.
