Just as I was about to step back inside, I saw him, a silhouette near the velvet curtains of the service entrance. My heart practically stopped. The profile, the sharp jaw, the way he held his head... it was the man from the surveillance photo.
Vane.
I didn't think about the risk. I didn't even think about Helena. I immediately slipped through the curtains, the music of the ballroom dying instantly, replaced by the hollow hum of the service corridor. I followed the shadow deeper into the bowels of the hotel, my heels clicking frantically against the concrete.
