Morning came too soon, dragging me out of a restless sleep filled with weird dreams I didn’t want to think about. The alarm blared beside me, loud and annoying, and I smacked it until it went quiet. I groaned, staring at the ceiling for a few seconds before forcing myself to sit up.

My room in the mansion still felt unreal. The soft cream-colored curtains, the fancy mirror, the huge bed that could probably fit three of me—it all screamed not my world. Back home, my room had peeling paint and a creaky fan that buzzed all night. This place was too perfect. Too quiet.
