The penthouse was quiet now.
Dinner was over. The dishes had been cleared. The city outside was glowing with lights, but inside, everything had softened into silence.
Roman had fallen asleep in the corner of the couch. His tiny arms were wrapped tightly around Fluffy the penguin, his cheek pressed to my father’s arm as he snored softly. The sight of them like that—safe, untouched by the storm around us—made something in me ache.
Margaret had taken a long, hot shower. Her face was pink from the steam when she came out. She didn’t say much. Just kissed my forehead, gave me a tired smile, and disappeared...
