Diesel fumes hang in the air as the launch throws up water in its wake as it crosses over to the smallholding, the dust settles back down on the road behind the departing Land Rover as it sets off for the small town of Kafue.
Silence hangs over the three women, each with their own thoughts as the launch moves through the water; Philip sits in the bow, his eyes scanning the water ahead for any sign of hippo or croc.
The words of his father play over and over in his head “Protect the redheaded woman, my son, protect her with your life.”
Carefully they move back up...
