Lucian drove me home in silence, his hand resting gently over mine whenever he wasn’t shifting gears. When we pulled up in front of my house, he turned to me with soft concern.

“I’ll wait outside here, Lily. Anytime you’re ready, just come back.”

I gave him an assured little smile and nodded. “I’ll be back. Don’t worry.”

“What about your mom?” he asked as I reached for the door handle.

“Don’t worry about her. I know what to do.”
