I found Mia near the gate just as she was about to leave with Sophia. I kept my voice calm and clear.

“We won’t be going home together. If Mom asks about me, just tell her I’m with Lucian.”

Sophia’s eyes twisted for a brief second something sharp and ugly flashing through them before she forced a small smile.
