Fear gripped Bethany and Fred like a vice as they rushed toward the commotion at the door.
“What’s going on?” Bethany gasped, her eyes darting around the hallway.
“Hey! Stop!” Fred yelled, bolting after a man who disappeared into the darkness. His heavy footsteps echoed, fading quickly.
Bethany froze at the sight in front of her—Natalie sprawled on the ground, bruised and beaten. Her breath hitched as she dropped to her knees beside her friend.
“Oh my God! Natalie! Are you okay? Who did this to you?” Bethany’s voice cracked, panic lacing every word. She gently shook Natalie, trying to keep her conscious.
Natalie’s lips parted, but no words came...
