If those pictures got out, my father wouldn't go to prison, because men like my father didn't go to prison. They disappeared, or other men disappeared in their place. But before any of that, there would be the part where it became real to the rest of the world. My mother in dark glasses pushing through reporters at the gate. My brother getting pulled out of school. Our last name turning into a punchline on the evening news. He had spent his whole life building a wall between us and what he was, and these three pictures were a hammer big enough to break it.
