Chapter 24: Josias is upset

The next day, Josias wakes up, stretching in bed, covered by the thin sheet from the waist down. He looks at Uélton's brother's jeans and T-shirt and gives a smile that says “I'm smiling so I don't cry”. Josias hopes that Uélton has not thrown his clothes away; otherwise he will have to work on the construction site with his brother's clothes!

After putting on his clothes and going down to brush his teeth, Josias goes to breakfast in Teodoro's kitchen. He's just finished straining the coffee. Teodoro gets distracted by Josias's clothes and misses the strainer, leaving coffee spilling on the table.

“Oops!” Teodoro realizes the error and returns to concentrate. “Good morning, son! How was the party? They let you borrow their clothes.”

“I was the one who left mine at Uélton's. I hope he didn't throw it out of anger.”

Teodoro finishes straining the coffee and closes the thermos. He takes it to the table. The two choose a roll to eat.

“How was it, then? Did you happen to find your angel?” Teodoro smiles at him.

“I think I found them both,” Josias responds, seriously.

Teodoro asks what he meant and Josias explains everything that happened: the meeting with Melissa, Pamela interfering in the conversation, Uélton talking about Josias's situation, the guys from a better neighborhood around Melissa, Pamela's contempt, and the supposed appearance of Everaldo.

The last part sent shivers to Teodoro's spine. “Are you crazy, man? The guy is really from the supernatural plane.”

“If he was, he could bless me by shooting those guys off the terrace,” Josias speaks bitterly while he chews. “Melissa was very focused on them.”

“Don't be jealous, my boy.” Teodoro encourages him, “Maybe she just answered her friend's request to meet the boys. And you leaving without telling her must have worried her.”

“Let's see today. And I want to know from Uélton why he went to open his mouth. He doesn't even know the story himself. If he is that kind of indiscreet friend, I'm getting out.”

Teodoro only observes Josias's hardness and firmness. He is a serious boy, who likes the right things; he does not admit that those who claim to be his friends treat him as an idiot.

With the same serious and upset face, Josias goes to Uélton's house before going to the construction site. When attended by Uélton's mother, she recognizes him and gestures for him to reassure himself.

“Young man, if you want to keep Wallace's clothes, you can stay.” She says in a kind tone, “I saw your clothes... that your briefs don't clean anymore, not even with chlorine or bleach if you want I can throw it away.”

Josias responds quickly, embarrassed. “No, ma'am, please! I need those clothes because something happened in my life that made me stay alone with them. These jeans are too clean for me to wear on the job.”

Uélton's mother looks at Josias with pity and then opens the door for him to enter. “Okay, you can go in. But, just take the sweatpants. And keep my son's clothes. I repeat, young man, that briefs are no longer usable, you can get an infection... down there, got it?”

Josias gulps. How to explain to a respectable lady that he only has that underwear? He still hasn't received payment, today is Wednesday and Romualdo will only pay on Friday. Uélton's mother must be thinking that Josias is now wearing other underwear and that he has more stored in his room.

Without further discussion, Josias enters, changes clothes wearing sweatpants, keeps the donated clothes in a plastic bag, and goes away thanking Uélton’s mother.

Upon arriving at the construction site, Uélton is already present and notices the plastic bag. “Hey, are my brother's clothes there?”

Josias, with a grimace, drops the bag on the floor anyway. “I stopped by your house to get my sweatpants back. She said I can keep them.”

“Consider this a donation. You need it.” Uélton says in a playful smile.

However, Josias thinks that Uélton is mocking him and pushes him against the wall. Since the wall is not plastered, the contact with the brick hurts Uélton's back.

“AIII!” He complains of pain and fright. Josias's gesture was out of the blue.

“What is this clowning, man?” Josias complains, “You can tell your mom that I can even overlook, but did you need to tell that friend of Melissa that the clothes were borrowed?”

“But, it was the truth!” Uélton speaks in a fearful tone of voice, “You didn't ask to keep a secret!”

“But, why just for her? Didn't you know that she came to me to despise me, saying that I was unworthy of Melissa for being a mere bricklayer assistant? And then, sending Melissa to talk to other guys more personable than me, as if it was all combined! Aren't you part of it?”

Uélton begins to fear for his safety. Josias was very angry.
