Nolan sat in the front seat, arms folded, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked like he could snap. The driver stayed silent in the driver’s seat, and Polly sat beside me in the back, stealing nervous glances in my direction every few seconds. I didn’t know what to expect. I just went out, why did it feel like I had committed a crime?

When we reached the house, Nolan didn’t wait. He got down, opened the back door, and without a word, scooped me into his arms like I was a doll he owned.
