 She had drifted off in my lap, so I scooped her up and carried her to my bedroom. I laid us both down on the bed, stroking her hair as she rested against my chest. This wasn’t at all how I’d pictured the morning going, but strangely, I felt no real regret. 






 Maybe all those times I’d gotten off listening to her with someone else had already burned away most of the shame.
