The office cleared out at six.

Mara stayed until six thirty, the way she always did — finishing the last of Adrian's schedule for the following week, sending the emails he had drafted but not reviewed, making sure everything was exactly where it needed to be. She was good at this. She had always been good at this. The specific satisfaction of a thing done properly was something she had never needed anyone to explain to her.

At six thirty she shut her laptop and picked up her bag and knocked once on Adrian's office door.

"Come in," he said.

She came in.
