Cole hadn't slept.
He lay on his back in the dark staring at the ceiling with his hands flat on his stomach and his jaw tight and his mind doing the thing it had been doing since the living room — replaying it, the towel, her eyes, the warmth of her when she walked past him, the way she had said that's different from can't like she had been thinking about the distinction for a long time.
He had eaten dinner alone. She hadn't come down. He had stood outside her bedroom door at some point — not to knock, just standing there like an idiot — and...
