Even though Jayden's familiar voice sounded somewhat cautious, I sensed a hint of anxiety and something else behind it. Maybe guilt? Or anger? Or was I just imagining it?

"Okay," I said quietly as I walked toward my room so Jared wouldn't hear. Even if I stayed here, I doubted he'd know who I was talking to, but I didn't know how long I could keep my tone neutral. I never knew what kind of reaction Jayden would elicit from me. "But I don't have time right now. Can I call you later?"
