William Newton snapped, fuming, “Hmph. That fickle woman—who knows how many men she’s been cozying up to just to mess with our family?”
“Don’t worry. I’ll have the servants check with the gatehouse right away. If we figure out which car just left, we’ll know who Hope’s benefactor is,” Mrs. Newton replied.
She sent two servants to inquire, and ten minutes later, they returned empty-handed. The gatehouse had no record of the car—it hadn’t been logged.
