Two large roosters perched on the fence suddenly stretched their necks and crowed loudly as Hope approached.

Mr Berry, standing nearby, jumped in surprise, but Hope just glanced at the roosters. They felt oddly familiar and comforting, like a flashback to her childhood.

Opening the gate, a flock of chicks scurried over, chirping nonstop, completely unafraid.

Hope stepped carefully to avoid stepping on them.

“They really seem to like you. Did you raise chicks before?” Mr. Berry asked casually.

Hope shook her head. “No. I was too busy as a kid to take care of anything, though every family in the village had chickens.”
