I'm sitting on the edge of the bed, finishing up a fairy tale for the kids. They're completely absorbed in the story, their eyes heavy with sleep. Just as I conclude the tale, Bennis walks into the room, a scowl on her face.
"What's going on here?" she asks, her voice rising. I can tell she's looking for a fight.
I glance up at her, my eyes meeting hers. "Just reading a bedtime story, Bennis," I say calmly. But before she can launch into a tirade, I silence her with a look. "Let's talk outside," I suggest, standing up.
