“Don’t go. Stay with me.” Really? Elvira really?
The second they slipped past my lips, I wanted to snatch them out of the air. I kept my face turned, pretending to be asleep. My heart was thudding against my chest, so loud I thought it might wake him up—except he wasn’t the one asleep. I was the one pretending.
I didn’t hear his footsteps retreating. No door creaked open. No cold air brushed against my skin. I waited. Still nothing.
After a few seconds that felt like hours, I slowly shifted, just a tiny tilt, just enough to peek through...
