The night felt longer than usual, the wind hollow as it swept through the trees outside my window. Sleep wouldn’t come. It hadn’t come in days. I lay on my side, staring at the shadows on the far wall, counting the seconds between the beats of my heart.

But it wasn’t the sleeplessness that made me feel hollow.

It was the visions.
