I looked at the diamond, then back at him. “No.”

“Maya.”

“I said no.” I curled my fingers around the ring. “Why would I take it off?”

“Because my mother has dementia.”

The answer took some of the fight out of me.

He nodded toward the closed door several feet away. “She has good days and bad days. Today is a good one.”
