He nods. 

"There are times when the wraiths become too strong for me to handle, and they want to spread into the world, so I come here to meditate because this place is filled with good magic. Good wins over evil," his sad voice says.

Dark magic can consume things and people around it, draining life and energy to feed and grow. I can't begin to imagine what Nicholas has to deal with daily. The darkness threatens to come out and destroy everyone around, but he fights it, and it hasn't corrupted him yet.
