The drive to Vivian's family estate had been tense, my mind replaying the chaotic encounter at the school earlier. Vivian chattered beside me, her hand resting on my thigh like we were just another normal couple.

We stepped inside, the air thick with the scent of roasted meats and polished silver. Vivian's parents greeted us warmly—her stern aunt with the perpetual frown, her jovial uncle who clapped me on the back too hard.

I forced smiles, nodding through small talk about work and the weather, my suit very tight against my skin.
