"We all are," I said. She looked at me as if I had said something terrible. Perhaps I did. I messed her hair up and smiled at her.

"What is it, my bride?"

"Nothing," she said and shook her head hurriedly.

"Are you afraid of me?" I asked.

"No... It's not like that."

"Then what is it like?"

"I don't know. You're so hard to read, but I'm not afraid of you," she muttered, but she was not so sure of that herself.

"It's better if you don't be. I won't hurt you," I said.
