The day after revealing the truth, I saw my mother.

Her eyes were bloodshot as she stared at me through the thick glass, a look of unwavering intensity. I knew she hated me, hated that I had spoken out and destroyed the warm home she had worked so hard to build over the years.

The stomach is an emotional barometer; with my spirits low, waves of pain surged through me, causing tears to well in my eyes. I took a deep breath, swallowed all my grievances, and picked up the phone to say just one thing to my mother: “I’m sorry.”
