As we walked to the motel, the silence between us deepened with each step, a widening gulf of unspoken resentment. Our footsteps seemed to echo in unison, a steady beat in the tense stillness.
Upon entering the motel, we approached the reception desk, where an elderly woman greeted us with a warm smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes.
"Welcome, lovebirds!" she exclaimed, her voice filled with grandmotherly warmth. "Are you folks looking to rent a room?"
"We aren't lovebirds," I shook my head, my voice firm. "and No, we need separate rooms."
The woman raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise flickering across her face. "Oh? Couples...
