I could see the flash of surprise gleaming in her eyes. Clearly my question unnerves her.
The silence stretches between us until she suddenly laughs.
“Come on, Knox. Don't be ridiculous,” she says in a loud voice. “How can you ask me such a question?”
I fix her a hard stare, my back resting on the headboard. “You said you don't give a damn if I'm your husband.”
“You should understand that I don't mean it that way,” she tries to explain.
“Right,” I chuckle dryly even though there's nothing funny about what she said.
