The guard’s finger tightens on the trigger, but Jace drags himself across the floor and slams into his legs before he can fire. The impact knocks the guard off balance. The gun flies from his hand and skids across the floor.
I lunge for it and wrap my fingers around the grip. I lift it with both hands and pull the trigger. The first shot slams into the wall. The second grazes a shoulder. I force my breathing to steady and fire again.
