He was saying something ridiculous, something about how I laughed like a villain in an old cartoon. I swatted his arm playfully, mid-laugh, my body still trembling from the echo of it, when his phone started ringing.
Leonardo pulled it from his pocket and checked the screen. His expression shifted in an instant, like someone had flipped off the lights behind his eyes.
His jaw tensed. He answered it, stepping away slightly, his hand dragging down his face as he listened.
I watched him carefully. His shoulders were still, but there was a different kind of tension in his stance now.
