“You want to adopt her?” William asks with a note of shock in his voice.

“Yes.” I drop the pen, resting on the seat as I watch the two CPS workers looking surprisingly at themselves.

“Ahem!” Mrs. Margaret clears her throat to speak but I do so before her.

“Vera and I have become close. So I can’t bear leaving her to loiter on the streets. I want to give her a better life. To adopt her as my daughter.”

“Well, that’s a different case altogether but then Vera would have a say this time around. She'll decide if she wants it or not.”
