The midnight air was cool, a soft breeze whistling through Ariel’s open window. Yet, despite the crisp air, her body burned with an unbearable heat. A feverish sensation churned in her stomach, sweat forming at her temple.
The discomfort stirred her awake. Her heavy-lidded eyes blinked open, staring blankly at the ceiling.
She took in a slow breath, hoping the night air would soothe her, but it did nothing to suppress the heat surging through her.
She exhaled weakly, then pushed the blanket aside and stepped out of bed. She made her way to the kitchen. Maybe a glass of cold water would help.
