"Noah," Maya said carefully, "where have you been? We could have used your help when the attack started."

"I was patrolling the outer borders like Austin told me to," Noah lied smoothly. "When I heard the sounds of fighting, I came running."

I knew I had to expose Noah's lies, but I had to be smart about it.

"Noah," I said, "show Maya your hands."

"What?" Noah said, looking confused.

"Your hands," I repeated. "Show her your hands."
