"In some loops, you don't have children," Elena explained. "In others, you have a daughter instead of a son. In a few loops, you have twins."

"And in the loops where we succeed?" I asked hopefully.

"There are no loops where you succeed," Viktor said bluntly. "That's why we keep resetting."

"But our son exists," Daisy pointed out. "So what does that tell us?"

Elena pulled out a small device that looked like a crystal sphere. It began to glow as she held it up.

"This will show us," she said. "It records the unique energy signature of each timeline."

The sphere pulsed with light, and suddenly images...
