Richard handed the key to Elias, his eyes darting between us like he was caught in a crossfire. Without saying a word to me, Elias turned and entered his office. He was really doing this. He was ignoring me as if I didn’t exist, as if he hadn't just upended my entire life at the hospital.

The anger bubbled up in my chest, hot and fast. I didn't knock. I barged into the office, the heavy door thudding against the wall.

"Now you're locking me out of my own office? You're firing me from my own job?" I shouted, my voice bouncing off the high ceilings.
