THE living room was quiet, a bit too quiet for Kate’s liking. The sound of a ticking wall clock filled the silence as she sat on the couch, her legs curled underneath her. Kelvin sat across from her, flipping through channels on the TV without really watching anything. King had already left for school, leaving the older siblings to their thoughts.

“Uncle Eric said there is nothing else left,” Kelvin finally broke the silence, tossing the remote on the table. “He said the lawyer can’t help anymore. The police won't bend. Oswald is pushing hard, and mom and dad might really end up in court.”

Kate scoffed bitterly.

“And so?...
