The room was very silent.
I had shut my eyes in slow blinking and the light of the curtains was coming through them in scarce shreds like knives. The lame pain in my head was a bit of sleepy progression after I had slept badly.
For a moment, I just lay there, breath slow, heart uncertain, trying to remember why I felt so tense. Like something had just gone wrong. Like I had been shouting.
But there was no blood.
No bruises.
No broken vase on the floor.
Only stillness.
