Dad watched me over the rim of his glasses. He did not push, but the concern in his face was plain. He had been the first to urge me to leave Damien after the shooting. He had sat beside my hospital bed and told me, in the quiet way only a father can, that loyalty should never cost a person their sense of worth. Samantha looked like she wanted to push harder. Lucas looked like he was filing the entire conversation away for later interrogation. I finished the coffee, rinsed the mug in the sink, and dried my hands on the dish towel.
