Dexter was lying to me. He had never before taken a phone call in the other room, so last night I stood by the bedroom door and listened to his conversation. He was talking about some sort of package, about me being suspicious. My heart had been beating the whole time, as I wondered what had changed between us in the past forty-eight hours.
