ADELE’S POV
The moment his footsteps faded down the hall, I pressed my ear to the door, holding my breath until I was sure he was gone. Silence. Finally.
I cracked the door open just enough to peek out. The corridor was empty, the morning light spilling across the floor like nothing had happened. Like my heart wasn’t splintering inside my chest.
I grabbed the two bags I’d packed and slipped out, pulling the door shut behind me with a soft click that sounded too loud in the quiet.
