They Only Wanted My Brother, I Was Abandoned
NANCY ROWSE
Introduction

In the divorce court, my parents both clung to my younger brother, refusing to let go.

When it was my turn, they vaguely asked who I chose, clearly afraid I'd cling to either of them.

I paused.

"Can I borrow a hundred dollars? I'm sick."

They flew into a rage.

"We're getting divorced and all you care about is money? You're money-hungry!"

"What kind of illness needs a hundred dollars? You're just a kid trying to scam us!"

Yeah, a hundred dollars wasn’t even enough for one round of chemotherapy.

I just wanted a new outfit to die with some dignity.
